Bottom and quay wall protection Deurganckdok (Antwerp harbour, Belgium)
With the help of fibrous open stone asphalt®, the bottom along the new quay wall was protected against erosion caused by the turbulence of mooring ships. 150,000m² was installed in-situ. For another 20,000m², the use of prefabricated fibrous open stone asphalt® mats was required.
Thanks to its open structure, the fibrous open stone asphalt offers resistance to the suction effect of water flow. This allowed the thickness of the fibrous open stone asphalt to be greatly reduced in comparison to the traditional soil protection materials.
The filtering layer under the fibrous open stone asphalt ensures that no transport of bottom material is possible. In this instance, a flow rate of 7m/s was taken into account.
