Construction of an environmental friendly bank (Eigenbilzen, Belgium)

In a project for De Scheepvaart nv, an environmental friendly bank was installed using fibrous open stone asphalt® along a distance of approx. 1 km along the Albert Canal in Eigenbilzen.

Usually the construction of bank structures along navigable waterways is mainly determined by the need to defend the banks against water flows and waves from motorized vessels.

In Eigenbilzen, the Shipping Department opted for a design that not only paid consideration to the primary protective requirement but also to ecological aspects.

By making a sound choice and using various products and bio-engineering techniques in combination, DEC created a bank protection that met the primary protective requirement while also having a valuable ecological character.

All the benefits of fibrous open stone asphalt® were used optimally here: flexibility, strength, flow-resistant, low-maintenance, draining and able to host vegetation.
