Construction of an overflow dyke in Lippenbroek (Hamme, Belgium)
After the storm of 1976, the sigma plan was drafted, with the purpose of creating greater protection against flooding of the Schelde basin. As part of that plan, a number of monitored flooding areas were designed. During extreme flooding, water would flow over the overflow dyke into the overflow area and thus act as a temporary buffer basin.
In Hamme, in a project for NV Waterwegen and Zeekanaal, an overflow dyke was created along the land side and covered with fibrous open stone asphalt®. Besides the high flow resistance and the open structure of the fibrous open stone asphalt, the great evenness of the fibrous open stone asphalt® offers an added benefit. This prevents additional turbulence.
